Michael Brown protesters delay symphony performance

4 Oct

Saturday’s St. Louis Symphony performance was briefly interrupted by Michael Brown protestors.

After intermission and before the symphony played “A German Requiem” in its all-Brahms concert, protestors scattered throughout the audience sang “Justice for us all.”

Protestors unfurled three banners from the balcony of Powell Hall, and chanted “black lives matter” before leaving.

The performance was met with applause from several audience members and the orchestra.

A small paper heart, reading “Requiem for Michael Brown,” was left behind.

St. Louis Symphony Vice President for External Affairs Adam Crane said all of the protesters had tickets for Saturday’s performance.

Michael Brown was shot and killed Aug. 9 in Ferguson by police Officer Darren Wilson. A grand jury is hearing evidence and will decide whether to indict Wilson.

St. Louis Symphony talks (and plays) like pirates

18 Sep

Sept. 19 is Talk Like a Pirate Day, and the St. Louis Symphony is celebrating.

Powell Hall, the symphony’s home, was established as the St. Louis Theater — a movie theater. In a call to those days, the symphony is providing the soundtrack to a few movies as the films play on the big screen.

The symphony will debut “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (the second in the “Pirates” series) on Friday at Powell Hall.

The symphony also will provide the soundtrack for “Gladiator” in October and “The Godfather” in March.
